Joanna Fieldes is an Auckland based artist who has been working in the discipline of oil painting since the early 1990’s and in more recent times she has extended her practice to include printmaking.
The dominant theme throughout Joanna Fieldes’ art career is the continuing impact of New Zealand’s colonial past on both its varied landscapes and the life forms, indigenous and introduced, that inhabit them. Through her paintings and prints she articulates serious narratives with a sense of humour, giving food for thought, bringing to life New Zealand’s past and present. She juxtaposes vessels, often in anthropomorphic guise in a rich tableau of the imported and indigenous within the landscape. The recurrent use of ceramic vessels dominates the work – acting both as containers of colonial culture and as the colonizers/colonized themselves.
Artist Statement

“History has revealed the strong human and animal desire to seek out, explore and inhabit greener pastures.Greener Pastures has new oil paintings in which I have used supports that have been laser cut from both Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) and Acrylic sheets. Working this way, I find that it brings my work to life, not just as paintings but as objects for the wall.
Included in this exhibition are monoprints & monotypes (printed using oil etching ink) which continue my storytelling, taking history for a walk. I have also included some of my previous works in this exhibition”.
