Containment, 2014

Containment 2014 - Hexad of paintings, oil on linen, each 1400mm x 700mm

In this body of work Fieldes, raised on a North Island sheep and cattle farm, turns her attention to fragments of family history, confrontation, colonization, and the transformation of the land as early settlers tried to create ‘Little England’ in the antipodes.  Symbolising our ongoing battle to contain pest species – and their containment of pre-colonial flora and fauna in shrinking enclaves – by the ceramic vessels which dominate her work, Fieldes creates a rich tableau of the imported and indigenous within the New Zealand landscape.
